Dragon Fire, Ocean Mist

Written and Illustrated by Yvonne Palka

For many years the author, an award-winning sumi-e painter and Washington naturalist, had been telling her grandchildren the story of a brother and sister who discover a family of dragons while on vacation at a Pacific Northwest beach. Now the author wanted help to bring it to a broader audience. Our task was to make the book relevant and marketable. To maximize the book’s audience and the positive impact of its message of kindness to those who seem “different,” we worked closely with the author to editorially develop a middle-grade dragon fantasy illustrated with sumi-e paintings by the author/artist. We art-directed the storyboard to give equal time to dragons and real-life marine creatures native to Washington State. Building on the author’s expertise as a naturalist and sumi painter, and to ensure the book reached children’s educational, gift, and tourism markets, we added short essays at the back of the book, about dragon lore, marine life, and sumi-e painting. The result is an award-winning novel with regional flavor that educates, inspires, and delights readers of all ages.
